About The Heated

biz cardThe Heated was not conceived as a design studio. Originally, Cristina Espinosa set out to make music and called it The Heated. But soon enough, she realized her music needed merchandise. She had always wanted to learn how to screen print but now there was a reason to take the plunge and what better medium than a dish towel? They're useful, affordable and one size fits all.

She didn't have a printing press and she had to have a friend hold the screen down for print runs. These things take time and piece by tiny piece, the methods of screen printing came together and now The Heated churns them out by the dozen, selling on Etsy, at the Renegade Fair and various online and brick-and-mortar retail locations.

In 2007, Espinosa enrolled in a furniture-making class, which she'd also always wanted to learn more about. So far, she's made an ironing board, a printer stand, a desk, several moustaches and a whale. While the woodworking aspect of The Heated is not currently available for sale, her workshop is coming together and production on The Heated's woodworking collection will start in mid-2010.

Reasons To Support The Heated

In building a business from the ground up, Espinosa has been able to model it after her own personal philosophy that less is more. Espinosa graduated from college with a degree in Environmental Studies. There is very little waste in the process of screen printing, especially plastic waste. Packages are shipped in cardboard whenever possible and even the tape is made of kraft paper. You can just toss the whole thing into the recycling.

Designs are printed using water-based, non-toxic ink. Supplies are bought locally whenever possible. The dish towels are 100% cotton and the natural style towel is made in the USA. The bleached towels are made in Bangladesh, which is not ideal and looking for sources that produce towels in the United States never stops around here. The Heated would love to use organic, American-made, flour sack. If you produce such a product, please get in touch (info@theheated.com).
